When life comes knocking at our doors, the first thing people do is sacrifice their sleep. Be it exams or office presentations, mounting work pressure, or societal obligations; it is the sleep that gets cut short. Are you sleeping for only 4-5 hours? Do you wonder if it is enough for you? Is 4 Hours of Sleep Enough?

Let’s cut the chase and give you the answer that you are seeking. Getting only 4 hours of sleep each night is not enough. Sleep is essential for your body, much like air and water. The average amount of sleep required can vary from person to person, depending upon their age and lifestyle. A report by the National Sleep Foundation gives the recommended duration of sleep for adults must be 7 to 9 hours.

Why Is 4 Hours of Sleep Not Enough?

Ideally, the sleep cycle consists of two categories-light sleep and deep sleep. During the light sleep stage, your body settles in, there are slight muscle movements and daydreaming. It amounts to 60% of the total sleep time.

There are two parts of the deep sleep stage: Deep and Rapid Eye Movement (REM). In the deep sleep period, your body repairs the cells, builds muscles, and consolidates memories. On the contrary, your brain awakens again in the REM stage, and you start dreaming. It may also help in balancing the mood and storing of your memory. The second stage of sleep accounts for 40% of sleep.

When you sleep for only 4 hours, your body doesn’t get enough time to rest and heal. It can be detrimental to health and lead to physical and mental disorders.

How to Ascertain if You Are Not Getting Enough Sleep?

Leading a busy life can often lead to sleep deprivation. If you are wondering how to know that you are not getting enough sleep, there are a few noticeable symptoms. They are:

  • Fatigue
  • Excessive yawning
  • Forgetfulness
  • Decrease in productivity
  • Difficulty in concentrating
  • Anxiety
  • Increase in medical issues

What Happens When You Sleep for Less Than 4 Hours?

Sleeping for 4 hours or less can take a toll on your health. Here are a few health risks of sleep deprivation:

1.       Shorter Life Span

Many doctors and researchers speculate that sleeping for less time over a prolonged period can decrease the lifespan. Research published by Sleep Journal established that both shorter and longer sleep durations lead to a higher risk of early death.

2.       Increased Chances Of Heart Troubles

Similarly, the people who sleep for less than 7 hours per night are more prone to developing cardiovascular disorders or suffering from a stroke.

3.       Risk Of Diabetes

Sleep deprivation may also lead to an increased risk of diabetes. A study by the University School of Medicine, Boston, shows that sleeping for less than 7 hours can cause impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes mellitus.

4.       Cognitive Impairment

The human brain and its function can deteriorate with aging. Much like that, sleep deprivation can also affect the cognitive functioning of young adults. If you didn’t get a good night’s sleep, it might affect your reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills.
